Hello again and thank you in advanced. I thought I would run this by someone.

When I turn the ignition key to start the truck, I hear a click. If keep doing this it just clicks. However, if I put the truck in neutral ( I have a manual transmission), it starts right up. This has been happening for two days now.

Battery on the truck appears okay - radio, lights etc are good. Truck has 110K miles 94 V6 4X4.

Unless someone objects, looks like I will replace the starter. I found one at Autozone for $159.

replace the starter contacts, dont let go of the original aisin stuff..

Search for starter contacts to get an idea of that..

 

I have a napa one that has a lifetime replacement on it
I bought it 2 years ago and it is still doing fine.
my original starter was full of sand and grime and was beyond repair

That doesnt really sound like a starter problem. "it starts right up if I put it in neutral". A starter problem would be present regardless....unless there is something I should know....

 

I wish my starter that wouldn't start anymore a little while back was the original Asin I would have just replaced the contacts...

I bought a lifetime warantee reman'ed from Advance Auto Parts and have had numerous issues with it...

I'm going to try and steal an original off a junk-yard 22r granted I can find one and rebuild it myself

 

You know, I didnt think about it until you mentioned it. You are quite right. It starts immediately if in neutral. Hmmm...

Geezz..now more research. It is not likely the starter cuz it always cranks over, but only in neutral and my foot on the pedal.

Now what? More searching the threads...thanks for pointing this out. Great mind you've got there.

 

My kid just had a similar issue with his 88 pickup. Replaced the starter but that wasn't the problem. Turned out to be a bad negative ground cable.

 

So when it's in neutral and the clutch is out it won't start? Hmmmmmmm....

Is this a truck that used to be an automatic and was converted to stick?

Turns out even with the clutch pedal pushed in and stick in neutral, I still got the clicks both attempts to start the car. However, after the second try, I heard a different click like the starter engaged. For some reason, I knew after the next try it would turn over. I was right. The third try, after I heard it engage, it turned over.

The consensus is to keep my starter and rebuild it. That said, it sounds like I have to make sure none of my connections to the starter are loose or compromised. If all the connections are tight, and I will clean the connections, it looks like I'm back to rebuilding my starter.

I will implement the suggestions above. It just surprises me since the truck only has 118K miles on it. Hopefully replacing the contacts is not too much above my head...thanks everyone...Please add your thoughts.

 

My wifes Camry was doing the same thing, replaced the started contacts and fixed it............regards....Rick

 

I would ALSO double check ALL grounds; body, frame, engine, battery, starter.

 

Just an update. I followed the link above and ordered the contacts. It was tough getting the starter out, but I did it. Disconnect the electrical wire behind the started before yanking out. It comes out from the bottom only and goes in the same way. Pay attention how it comes out.

After more than a year, no problems with the starter -none! That said, I rarely drive the truck about one day a week.. Im now at 134K miles. It was easy to rebuild and I learned so much from all the post..thank you diyers...I appreciate the help
