cleaning spark plugs with wd40

This question pertains to my 2 cycle boat motor but figured all the gear heads here would be able to answer anyway..... I want to clean my soark plugs (not replace) trying to diagnos motor trouble, is it ok to use wd40 insted of brake cleaner (and a wire brush)?

Just buy some spark plugs. You are trying to eliminate potential culprits. Why go cheap here? C'mon a spark plug is what, $3.00 max?

We always just used some gasoline to clean up the plugs on our quads. Plus, the iridium plugs for the 2 strokes are $10 each. I definitely would not use wd-40 though.

Thanks, I don't think it is the plugs, put 16oz can seafoam in w/ 20 gal gas, got 1/4 thru tank and motor quit. Don't think that would of damaged plugs but wanted to clean them to make sure,..... not buy new plugs when I still have 3/4 tank gas/seafoam to go. I didn't get to buy boat by wasting money.

If it is a sandard plug, use a small piece of sandpaper to clean the electrode.
Just remember to re-gap the plugs afterward. Especially re-gap if it's a 2 stroke.
