On my 98 4Runner in my door jamb it says I'm supposed to have 225/75 15 tires, but I have the 265/70 16s. When you get the upgrade packages which include the final drive is that information included in the door jamb sticker, or is it likely that the previous owner upgraded just the tires and not the final drive? To lower the final drive is all I have to do is replace the rear diff, or do I have to do the front too? Thanks!

 

I have a '93 and the information in the door jamb isn't what came on mine either. My sticker reads 225/75-15 on 15x7 wheels. Mine came with 10.5x31-15 on 15x8 wheels. I experienced this with a Dodge Dakota I had as well. The door jamb sticker refers to the base grade tire/wheel package. I'm not certain, but I think depending on how your vehicle was optioned, it may have gearing suitable for the 265's. In any event, if you want to change the gearing, you'll need to do the front and rear simultaneously. If you don't, your vehicle will be very entertaining to drive while in 4 wheel drive

 

As far as I know, the door jamb size is the tires your truck came from the factory with and hence what the speedo is calibrated to...unfortunately, that will mess up your speedo's accuracy. :pat: very few will keep the stock weenie tires, it don't look right.

My 95 says it's suppose to have 225 as well. But the guy I bought it from has 31x10.5's. I was planning on upgrading to 32's. The 4runner already seems slow from the start. How can I make sure what gearing I have? Also how hard is it to change.

 

My '95 with the Limited package, which was a port installed pkg, and included the 31x10.5s, listed the smaller tires on the door jamb. The calibration was also taken care of along with the port installed upgrade.

So, any prior owners may or may not have installed larger tires.

It's easy to check, just compare your speedo numbers to the mile marker on the highway. If they match, it was a port installed option.

 

my 86 says 225 also. that's like what, a 28" tire?

 

On the way home from work there was one of those things on the sde of the road telling you your speed. Mine speedo said the correct speed so I'm assuming mine came with the 31's. But does this mean my gearing is still the 225 veriety?

 

My 2K has a 4.10, and I can't really remember for sure, but I think my '95 had a 4.30. You can chock the tires and jack up one tire with it in neutral and check the drive shaft revs for a couple of tire revs if you really want to be sure.
