Studded AT's vs. Snow tires

I am going to buy a set of snow tires for my truck. I started a job across the lake in NY and have an hour+ commute daily- plus I like to drive log roads during deer season looking for tracks and there is often some good snowpack.

I know that in normal winter driving a well-siped snow tire will beat out a higher void A/T or M/T tire even with studs.

But I think the higher voids help in deep snow, which we get plenty of especially on log roads.

I'm thinking about studding up a set of cooper ST's, DEAN m/ts or similar aggressive AT/ modest MT as an alternative to a full snow tire. I've never run a snow tire and always done fine with an AT or MT so I imagine one studded would be boss.

Can anyone comment on the advantages/disadvantages of either combo? Gas mileage? What do you guys in the snowbelt run in the winter?

AT's all the way. They're siped and they generally don't affect fuel economy. They love the snow and hold their own on ice; perfect for long commutes.
