Well I was driving yesterday, when accelerating through the gears, my engine kept winding up without going much faster, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. I was driving a steady 45 and gave it gas(1/2 to 3/4 throttle) resulting in a whole lotta noise and no go, until I let off then the tranny caught.

So it looks like I need a new clutch. This is my daily driver, so it will need to be fixed before other damage can ensue, and because of limited tools and experience will have to be taken to a shop. My truck is an 87 4X4, with the 22R (carb) 4cylinder engine, and has the 5 speed manual. Here are my questions:

1. What should I expect to pay for a shop to replace my clutch? (parts+labor)
2. Are there other brand clutches (other than toyota) that work well and I should consider?
3. Is there anything else I should make sure gets done along with the clutch job?
4. Anything else you can add that would help me?

 

a) $150 to $400 for parts, 4 hours for labor.
b) centerforce clutches are the best. If you don't care about clamping force, have big tires, ride the clutch, tow heavy loads, etc., then even a $100 clutch will last 70k miles or so.
c) throwout and pilot bearings, resurface the flywheel
d) nope. its a straighforward job.

 

Thanks 99, anybody else have any quotes? Todd (TOR) maybe? Maybe you know the price of a toyota brand clutch? One garage quoted me at about $600 for the parts because they are official toyota parts.

 

Marlin clutch is $200 and its genunie Toyota stuff.

 

Only $200? Geez, I don't what these guys are smoking to knock the price up by $400.

I am going to call some more shops tomorrow and hopefully I can find someone in the $500 range for everything.
