If you are swapping in the whole motor, any year from '81-'88 should work (dont take my word on that 100%). If you're swapping in just the head or short block, then pre-'85. Best to try and get the motor closest to your year as possible. IMO, try to get an '82-'85. '81 had the dual row timing chains so there may be some differences there.
