i figured a little lower gearing with stock size tires would help me pull a little better on the road

Don't bother with 4.56's Just get 4.88's. Cost is nearly the same. You get more pep and are set up for 33" tires

If you're going to go with a Lockright, then step right up to 4.88s

well i would love to get 4.88's there the same price but i dont plan on lifting this truck its my dd. i just want a little more pull than what i got but 4.88's would kill my gas milage and run my motor to death.

my plans with this truck is, 35lb flywheel, finsh the exhaust from header back with high flow cat, 4.56 gears and a locker.
but i am trying to find an exented cab 3.slow thats in good shape.

Why do you want a locker for your DD?

4.56's were a stock option with 31's so you will be fine. There's not a huge difference between 4.56's and 4.88s though. You make it sound like you would be turning 5 grand going down the freeway. Most auto 4Runners that came with 31's had 4.88's from the factory. If you have a locker someday your going to want to step up to a bigger tire. I made this mistake once by saying this is my DD I'll never go bigger than a 33. Two regears later I'm now on 37's

just go to 4.88's you wont get much more pep out of 4.56's and 4.88's as stated above arent gonna make you turn 5 grand on the highway go to justdifferentials.com and they have a gear calculator you can use to figure it out

I'd definitely go with 4.88 over 4.56 and if the gearing is no good with 31s you can run 33x10.50 with no lift.

Toy motors like to rev, you're not going to kill fuel economy or longevity by reving it.

No need to lift the truck to fit 33x10.5r15 tires, they fit perfect as is.

i am currently running factory 4.88s with a lockright and 31x10.5x15s. i can personally say that the jump from 4.10 gearing was a BIG difference. before, i would cruise at ~70mph (read ~65) and would be ~2900 rpms. now, when cruising at ~70mph (reads ~78), i'm at ~3300 rpms. haven't checked my gas mileage, but i'd say its right about the same, maybe 1-2 mpg less but definitely has more power and i can easily pass people on the hwy now that i cruise in the "power band". great for hills and city driving, long drives/hwy speeds probably not so much but not bad either.

i wouldn't waste my time with 4.56 unless they're free.

lockright is not bad on-road either. definitely "different" than open diffs, but once you get used to it you'll know how to cope with it in various situations.

I'm running 31's and 4.56 gears with an Aussie in the rear (similar to a Lockrite) and have no complaints other than if I had to do it all over again I'd have gone with 4.88's. This is my DD/trail rig/camping rig/etc and now that I've wheeled it a bit I want 33's, which need 4.88's........ you see the issue.

Go with 4.88's. Trust me on this.
