This may sound wierd, but, has anyone been changing their shift knob and when they went to pull the lame-o 8 ball off the po had installed, had the shifter pull out of its seat? Isn't there any type of retaining device that should hold it in? You know, like a cotter pin, or compression pin? just scared the crap out of me, i push it back in and got 2 clicks, or rather you could feel it seat back in, and now it slides into every gear like butter.

 

there is a retaining device. take off the shift boots then press down on the retaining device and give it like a eighth turn and the shifter will lock in
