New here...have question about idle/tranny fluid

My friend just bought a 89 Toyota truck with a 22RE and has a a few questions...he's not the best with computers so I'm helping him out.

1. The truck idles fine when sitting and driving but soon as he applies the brake, the idle rises and falls erratically. Soon as he lets off the brakes, the idle goes back to normal and is rock steady. Is it...

-that white plastic check valve that runs along the firewall (connecting two vacuum lines) and is connected to the break master cylinder

-the actual brake vacuum booster. This seems to make more sense because if it was leaking it would change the idle.

2. How much transmission fluid does it take and what weight do you recommend?

Thanks a lot..I appreciate it.

1- a few possible causes: Idle speed is set too high- should be ~750 RPM; throttle position sensor is not adjusted properly; vacuum leak(s), possibly with the brake booster.

2- what type of transmission... auto, manual... 2wd, 4wd?

Oops..forgot about that.

It's a manual 2WD.

Thanks for the help regarding the idle.

He's going to buy a new brake vacuum booster to see if that cures it. I was just hoping that someone here experienced the same symptoms and could give a strong opinion towards that being the issue. He's tight on money and doesn't want to waste $150.

Anyone know the second part of the question regarding tranny fluid (type/amount)?

75W90 gear oil, my manual says 2.6L. Lots of people have had good success with Redline MT-90. It's a GL-4 and seems to work better with the synchros than GL-5.
