2001 Tacoma X-Cab 4WD 3.4 Possible purchase...

Hey all,

Am looking to purchase above vehicle. It has 199,000 miles but is in good running condition and body is in great shape.

I have a '95 4Runner with 169,000 and other than the notorious #6 cylinder-head gasket going out have not had any problems.

Anything I should look for? Any problems with this year (like a weak head gasket)?

Truck have HUGH tires and wheels. I am guessing a 6" lift with 35" tires and wheels.

Asking $5000 for the truck. Is this too high for a vehicle with nearly 200 miles?

Thanks for any suggestions or information.

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

Check the lift, make sure it's solid. In all likelihood it has a bracket lift. Check your CV angles and boots, as well as driveline angles. If it has anything over a 2" body lift (if it has one at all), you might think twice about it. The engines are solid. The frames were recalled, IIRC, so you might look into that. But if everything checks out, I'd say $5K is a pretty decent price...

I'm sure others will chime in here...

Why is that?

agreed, if it has a BL check the body mounts to see if they're intact still. Odds are balljoints and tie rods will be on their way out, check if they've been replaced. You won't be able to take the drop bracket off so make sure you reeally want it. With 35s you will be experiencing normal problems we all face, just more frequently.

IMHO, anything over a 2" BL is pushing it. I have a 2", wheeled it pretty hard, and it's doing fine, but I personally think that going beyond that is asking for eventual trouble. There are those that have ran them and have been fine, but I just think you're pushing the limits of the strength of the body mounts at that point.

But like I said...just my opinion.
