Well, the time has come to replace my oricinal 183000 mile shocks with new ones. I cant stand it anymore, my fillings are going to rattle out!!!!

I looked at the oem shocks, kyb monomax, bilstein and old man emu. They all look like sweet shocks. Does anyone have any experience with shock selection in 3rd gen 4 runners? hit me up!!!!!!!

You need springs too, so go for a lift. I have Bilsteins.

 

I am going through the same decision right now with my 2000. I want to replace the suspension and I have been reading through dozens of articles and I am just confused. I don't really want to do a lift (maybe 1 inch) since I will mainly be on the road and don't want to spend a bunch of money and dont want to swap out anything more than the struts and springs and not worry about other components going bad because of a non-stock ride height. I may need to occasionally pull a trailer or drive offroad. I want to upgrade from the OEM suspension since it has gone bad, but everything I read is all about doing lifts and for offroading. I am thinking about going with billsteins, just not sure what springs to go with...

On the cheap good quality suspension little lift OME like 500-660
all the way around! I like the OME on the front don't know about dakars since I have Alcan on the rear for the custom jobber

 

I just installed a set of bilstein 5100 front shocks that have the adjustable collar. They can be set to stock height or 1.5 or 2.5 inches of lift. Toytec sells them. The valving R&D was done by RCD and they are perfect. The only problem now is that I notice the rear shocks pounding now.

 

Bilstien 5100's....end of discussion, by far the best shocks I have ever had on anny of my 6 trucks. They cost a bit more than most but well worth it, I think they have a lifetme warranty too.

Hands down the best shock I've ever run are the OME N91SC comfort valved shocks. They're a huge improvement over the Rancho, KYB, Monroe and OEM shocks I've used in the past. No personal experiences with Bilsteins, so I can't compare the two.

 

Why do you need to change springs at the same time?

My gas-a-just rears are starting to feel like crap, the tubes are starting to rust too..

 

With something like 100k+ miles the springs are saggy, its just a good idea to replace all springs and shocks..

 

do both where you are at it, why not.

My brother found skyjackers for $26 a piece for the rears with a lift. They were scratch and dent from the manufacturer I believe. I just installed them last weekend and they ride pretty nice.

 

Just remember you get what you pay for in most cases...

I've really enjoyed the OME's.

 

Very happy with OME. N91S's upfront are perfect with Tundra coils and ARB bumper and the N86's out back are solid performers too. They are very firm with no load or passengers and when I replace them I will probably go for the N86C comfort version instead.

 

I was like JayPee784, having a stock 1998 ltd with 153,000 miles and needed new shocks/springs able to handle the winter frost heaves/potholes here in Maine. After tons of research, got the Sonoran Steel 3.0 - Tokico Trekmasters and 1999 stock Toyota springs. Added new top plates for the front shocks. After 2 weeks, I love them. Ride/handling have vastly improved. The Trekmasters have lifetime guarantee. SS shipped them directly to my indie shop to install. Whole process went smoothly. Understand why others like Bilstein HD's, but comments I read about harsher than stock ride turned me away.

 

Yea I do most of my driving in the White mountain region in NH and frost heaves etc are a signifigant presence.

My dad put softer than stock rear springs on the back as he always said it "rode better when weighed down" now I have it and the rear axle feels like its going to shake itself loose and the back wants to tip so bad.

Good excuse to change it all I guess.

 

Here's another vote for OME comforts. On our annual Uintas camping trip. There's a road over "Elizabeth Ridge" that is absolute torture because of potholes and baby-head-sized rocks. Last year I put on my OME springs and went with the black Tokico's and it was ROUGH. This year I upgraded my shocks to the OME comforts (see my sig) and we literally went through it twice as fast, and with better control (absolutely no side-sliding from rock-jounce). I noticed a break-in period on the shocks (which seemed weird), but I'm so glad I have them now. It really made the trip more enjoyable to fly over stuff that used to beat us up. This is my second vehicle with OME comfort shocks, and I'll probably put them on my next rig.
