on the 03 4Runner the horse power is 235 and 320 torque

on the Tundra its 240 hp and 315 torque

why the difference, as they are both certified as LEV emissions?

The actual block itself is the same. The difference is the header/exhaust system. Also the air intake is different and I'm sure the computer is programmed different for the changes in all of the above. I don't think the 5 speed - 4 speed tranny makes any difference though.

 

I asked this same question to a Toyota engineer at a TTORA take over a couple years ago.

He told me its in the computer and has to do with emmsions laws.

He went on to explain think of the auto industrie like this, You have a bank of clean air. for your huge SUV's you take a huge withdrawl from the "government" but with your little compacts you give some back. Thats why the big three will carry their little cars even if Toyota and honda kill them in sales. He says thats also why the big three have some many low emmsions little cars and propane vans running around.

It was a very interesting conversation!

But you can offset this change by adding a muffler and or other simple mods.

that'd be the CAFE standard, which says that all cars produced must get a certain average fuel economy, i believe it's something like 27mpg right now. so for every 8mpg gas guzzling suv chevy makes, they have to put out a bunch of cavaliers that get 40mpg or whatever to offset it

 

Actually, I think that there are separate CAFE numbers for cars and light trucks, so the cars can't really offset the trucks. The car CAFE number is 27.5mpg, and for light trucks it's 20.7mpg. I believe there are also "domestic" (US & Canadian content based) and "import" fleet targets.
