4runner taco whip antenna mod?

I was looking on 4runner.org (great site) because I'm thinking of replacing my power antenna on my 2000 limited with a whip one.
When I installed my amp though, I think I remember wiring the amp "on/off" to the antenna so that when the antenna goes up, the amp goes on. does this sound right? Anyways, where would I wire my amp if I didn't have this setup (ie installed a whip antenna)?
I assume it would be the same way taco owners do it (how is that?)...
thanks!

My antenna just connects to the HU, and it works, and the amp turns on when the HU turns on...

same way with stock amp

you need to wire it to switched ignition power ''also the same wire that turns the stereo on and off'' easy to find if you have a multi meter. if you search the web you should find wire diagrams for your vehicle. but if you installed an aftermarket stereo your amp needs to be wired to the solid blue wire and not the blue with white stripe

if you hook it up to your antenna then the amp will probably only turn on when listening to fm, when you switch to a cd it will probably turn off

find something that only has power when the key is in accessory or on, like your radio switched power or wipers or power windows and use that for your signal for the amp

My aftermarket HU keeps the antenna up no matter what input is being used (thanks to a ty installation job by a local car audio place). If I had and idea how to wire it just to AM/FM I would do it, but for now I will just deal with the antenna being up all the time

depends on your hu some will have a ant wire and some just have a remote amp wire which will turn the ant on in cd and radio mode you will want to just use that to turn your amp on

your HU probably does put it down when you listen to cd, they probably just hooked your antenna up to the remote wire

if you have a wiring diagram with your HU then pull it out and see if they hooked it up to the power ant or the remote, your HU might not have a power antenna wire
