Hey Guys,
I need to know the legnth of the rear half of a 2 piece driveshaft (the section after the carrier bearing). Looking to use it in place of my own rear half. Could someone measure their's for me please?
Reason:
on 4wd's the rear half has the slip yoke (driveshaft extends), on the 2wd's it's a fixed legnth. On the 2wd's the shaft that comes out of the tranny slids in and out, but that is a limited amount. I'd like to change that to a 4x4 style shaft assuming it fits.
The rear shaft on my 2wd is 32" from u-joint to u-joint.
Looking for something that is that legnth at a minimum.

A better solution would be to do away with the two-piece setup completely and use a one-piece instead.

 

I have looked into that, but everyone I have talked to has said that a 60+ inch drive shaft would have to be about 5 or 6 inches in diameter (not exactly feasable).
The problem I have is I don't bolt the driveshaft onto the tranny.
No transfer case.
What holds it in place in the end of the tranny is the carrier bearing.
Unless you know of somewhere that can do that for me inexpensively

Damn, forgot how short your tranny is. I'd see what Jesse has to say, he knows these things better than any of us do. I had him retube a shaft for me ($140 shipped) and it's stronger yet smaller than before, heavier wall tubing and no bulge like the stock tube. Not sure if that extra length will be an issue on yours though, mine is ~4' long.

 

Actually, it's not my tranny that is short (well, I suppose it's that too ), but my wheelbase is longer than an extracab of the same year by about 12" or so.
I'll give Jesse an email and see what he can come up with.
