3.4 Swap into an 89 4x4 truck in progress! Some questions......

Recip: 1989 3VZE 4x4 MT Truck
Donor: 1997 4Runner 4x4 AT

Any info on resistoring the AT harness? Or am I wasting time? If so which harness/ECU combo is the best to purchase?

I have an ECU/harness from an automatic car. Going into a manual car. Can you add resistors to fool the ECU into running correctly, or do I have to get a manual harness/ECU? If so which is the best to get?

I have a brand new 99 4x4 M/T harness for sale. I can repin it for what ever ecu you buy. I can also make the conversion harness.

Def not rocket science. Most harnesses as long as you are within a couple years of each other are the same. Toyota just likes to move the pins around every freaking year. I am using a 99 harness and a 00 ECU in my 4runner.

Boys boys don't scare the poor fella. I'm sure he'll be more then willing to help us all figure out a few things. TMZ, didn't they change the body harness plugs in 91 or so. I know I'm going through the mid-year-changes blues but based on what I've seen on other trucks and EWD's all the plugs from 91 up are the same (I'm talking specifically about IH1 & IH2) How do you easily re-pin them. I've tried taking a 91 IH1 plug apart and basically destroyed it. I know there are some retaining clips that hold he connectors in the plug but how do you get that out without breaking the little ears on it? Is there a technique or a special tool?

The Toyota Wire Harness Repair Manual has all the info you need, including part numbers for wire, connectors, etc... and shows you how to remove pins from connectors. I re-pinned a few of my connectors and had to remove all of the connectors from the engine harness to slide it through my modified bellows. One of the utility blades of my Leatherman Micra was the right shape, and with a little work on a pedestal grinder was the correct size to work with almost all of the connectors. The manual is a little under 5mb worth of pdfs, so if you want a copy pm me an e-mail address to send to. You can also find the pin removal tool or something very close at many electrical supply stores.

I think I have the wiring repair manual already. I was just experimenting with the 91 IH2 I took apart. The 90 plugs are like most computer plugs just use a small screwdriver or Leatherman and they come right out. I had to move a few wires around on my harness adapter because I got the plugs from a 89 manual 2WD. Technically I think I just had to add some plugs from another donor harness.

I use jewlers screwdrivers to remove wires from the plugs. After doing so many it almost becomes second nature. I did my first 3.4 swap 2 1/2 yrs ago. since 2 more, 7mgte, 7mge, 1uz, and a tc engine and suspension into a xb. I also made a harness for a 3.4 to go into a buggy that had no body harness. I have alittle practice with the wiring.

OK, I located a 3.4 manual 4x4 harness and ECU from a 95 T100 - will this work with my 97 4Runner engine in the 89 truck? Thanks!!!

95 t100 has egr, 97 4rnr has evap. You can run the egr system but will have to gather all the parts. I would look for around 97 to 00.

You could just use the auto harness with a manual ecu. Same harness really, just ignore the auto wiring.

All the the manual ecu looks for, is the the reverse and 4x4 light sensors...

No, you can leave the pins in the plugs. The manual trans ecu doesnt care if there are pins there or not, its not looking for any signal from them anyways.

The biggest trick is getting the ecu that your plugs will fit into. If you end up with an ecu that your plugs will not fit into you can buy new plugs and re-pin the 5vz into the new plugs if you have the time.
