So I bought an 87 4runner SR5 today and to my dismay it has the Toyota auto locking hubs. I personally am a fan of manual hubs. So my question is, what info do I need to know about the axle to order a set of manual hubs (probably Warns unless I get a better suggestion). I've been searching on Google for awhile for the info I need but everything I'm finding is stuff for sale, not info.

Yep that's a cool red runner. Don't blame you for hating Goodyears. I think they are overpriced and I have had 2 sets on new Honda cars and have had to replace one on each because of sidewall puncture. I guess that's just my luck and not the tire, but I still don't like them.

 

The research I have done has a thumbs up on stock toyota (aisin) hubs. Both of my yotas run them and have had no problems. Enjoy the runner

 

i think you'll find that everyone will agree that the stock Aisin hubs are much stronger than the Warns. there is a difference b/w IFS hubs and solid axle so be sure and getr whichever match your truck.

im pretty sure the only reason i got stuck was due to an error between the headrest and steering wheel. im going to check tomorrow to make sure the front driveshaft/wheels are spinning (idk, put it up on jackstands?). ill admit, short of changing my own oil and other minor maitenance im new to all this.



after spending all day bashing on my dads ranger it ended up being the vehicle that pulled me out. ill never hear the end of it.

wait wait, i have a good excuse!!!! seriously, i do. there is definitely a problem with the hubs. i put it up on 4 jack stands and put it in 4h and 4l and the front tires were not spinning. the front driveshaft WAS spinning as were the cv axles. any ideas?

i did pretty good for 2 wheel drive

 

and for anyone who misses my first post, they are auto hubs. ive known some nissans and stuff where you had to drive 10ft before the hubs engaged and all that so i tried everything, the hubs will not engage. i have the haynes manual and will attempt to remove the hubs... now i just have to buy some more tools (YAY). ugh, i want manual hubs.

 

In the pictures you have attached through face book it is clear that you have manual aisin hubs that need to be locked in, so unless that is not your truck or you changed the hubs those are manual and you need to turn them to lock. If it still does not work turn the aisin hub to free then remove them to see if the spring or inside of it is bad.

 

Yup, those look like manny hubs to me...

If you locked them, and they didn't engage, you might have some problems with the guts. They're not hard to rebuild.

 

sorry, i realize how it could look like that. the red lettering makes it look like the manual hubs but i assure you they are auto hubs.

Well, in THAT case...

Check with DeathCougar, or WaskillyWabbit. DC might be able to get you some Aisins from the yard, and Wabbit can get you a deal on some rebuilt Aisins. Definitely stay with Aisin. Don't go with WARN. You've been "WARNed"... get it?

wow i was very incorrect, but as long as you see how i feel better, the auto hubs on my 93 were very different than that. you may want to just go to a yard and buy some used manaul hubs. mine were 50 bucks and i saved that already in gas and wear on my cv's. But back to your problem start by pulling off that front cover and making sure all the parts are there, someone may have taken parts out due to malfunction or for better gas millage then not tell you about it.

i totally see how you confused them. when i looked at the pics i realized that they do look just like my manual hubs from my 94 ext cab truck.

the only problem with taking them out is the haynes manual mentioning something about spring tension and such when the hubs are put back in. i have to make a 200mi drive back to school friday so i cant exactly do that atm since i have no way of checking the tension.

The stock Aisin units are far supperior to aftermarket hubs

Wabbit sells SFA hubs, not IFS hubs



Junkyard would be your cheapest bet, and clean/rebuild yourself

 

so what im reading is that the auto hubs from 84-89 are "notoriously unreliable" AND they disengage after a 1/4 of the wheels in reverse on purpose, not as a manufacturing defect. how dumb is that? thats like not wearing a back plate because you wont be running away so you wont get shot in the back...
