what will it take to make this work? since we lifted my 4runner my wife and i really hate the fat lip bumper we have now. it looks like a pouting kid about to trip over his lip. anyhow any input would be nice.

No it will not be a bolt up if that is what you are asking.... anything can be made to fit of course, it won't match up to the body properly...

I'm no expert -I work in an office all day.

Verify with the Tacoma guys over on TTORA to be sure

The stock bumper is nice if you want to hide a winch inside it. The early bumpers aren't deep enough to hide a winch

it may not be an easy fit...

the 1999-2002 4Runners have the reinforcing frame up front and that may prevent a 1996-1998 4Runner bumper from fitting properly on your 2001 4Runner.

nuts... so what are my options? obviously i dont need any Armour but i do hate the stock look. what about cutting off the fat lip part and build a wire mesh insert like my grill? do yall think that will look ok?

if you REALLY want the old model bumper, you can remove the bumper reinforcement sub-assembly because it's bolted to the frame. but then toyota placed it there to improve passenger safety in case of frontal collision.

Will a 99 front bumper bolt right up to a 96-98?

yes, a 1999-2002 4Runner bumper will be a bolt-on fit to a 1996-1998 4Runner. a lot of members here have done that mod.
