3.0 sounds like its knocking (non engine guy post)

My 3.0 sounds when i give it gas like its almost not got enough octane, etc. or something. Makes a sound like its not really picking up speed when i give it gas, etc.

Another issue is engine idles strangely at about 1700 RPM on cold days until car warms up, about 90 seconds or so, no big deal.

At idle engine sort of rumbles, shakes a bit.

Otherwise runs great. Especially once warmed up.

I've read all about the engine, etc. Mine is an 89 4 Runner with 180k miles.

Anything I ought to do:
(1) gas wise, octane, is 87 ok?
(2) any particular filters I need to change, air, etc.
(3) other suggestoins?

Thanks engine people. I'm not a mechanic by any means but willing to listen and learn.

well if its "PINGING" when you give her some gas then its your timing but if its KNOCKING like knocking on a door when your driving then its most likly the lower end and time to do a rebuild hows your oil level?

idle high is normal when its cold and cold out side not sure where you live

when was the last time you pulled the spark plugs and checked the wires?

could just be time for a tune-up a full tune-up
plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and timing set

87 is what i run in my rigs but mine a re both 22re's

Allan is pretty much correct.

If it sounds like someone shaking BB's in a metal can when you step on the go pedal and the engine is lacking power, it is most likely the timing is not correct. The ignitor module or a wiring issue could cause this though, but first you would have to verify the timing and idle speed are correct.

A high idle when cold starting the engine is perfectly normal, as long as it settles down to a normal idle within a few minutes.

Thanks. To clarify, when I give it gas, its sort of a "gurgling" sound almost if that makes sense. Not trying to be sarcastic but just basically sounds / feels like its taking the gas but not giving all the power back.

Again i know about 3.slow etc and all that. Just something reminds me of driving an old chevy 350 or something, feels like the gas is just being inefficiently used by the engine.

Any other suggestions or just take it in for a tune up?

take it in man you will get raped for that!!!!

go to auto part store get the plugs wires and cap and rotor

then install it your self its very easy to do and well if my wife can do it on a 3.1 Buick you can do it on a 3.0 yota!!

I agree with changing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor as well but also something else to think about is these injectors tick... some worse then others. Also my truck started making a pinging noise and it started getting loud and louder over a couple months until i found out the bolts on the T join of the exhaust manifold were getting loose i tighten them up and the noise went away... just something else for u to check while your under the hood. size is a 14mm on the nuts i believe
