1990 3vze tach troubles

1990 3vze tach troubles
so i was driving to school this morning, when i noticed the tach dropped to zero every time it idled. the engine never died, never made any funny sounds, just allegedly went to 0 RPM's. the tach still functioned correctly at any RPM's higher than idle.
any ideas on what could have cause that?
