Does Toyota keep records of serial #'s so that I could call them up and find out what it's out of. I know that It's a W series but I need to tear it apart and rebuild it and need to know the parts. It's going to be my first time in a transmission. virgin territory here.

You might be able to match it up with the tranny pics on this page

Didn't you swap an R151 in your 4Runner? I'm lined up to buy an R151 from a friend this winter. I'll have 2 W56's for sale soon

yeah I got it for free and wanted to tear it apart just for schnitz and giggles You might like that r151 I don't like it cause I don't have the squrels for it. The 5th gear is too tall and the rpm change from 1st to 2nd is too drastic for me. can't start in 2nd in 4 low on a hill it stalls out. need to put 5.29s in though that will help. still have the 31's so I'll be going the other way ha ha.

The reason I want the 151 is it will be the perfect tranny when I swap in a 3.4

Can't go wrong with free, tear it open and learn all you can

If you get itchy to swap out the R151 for something else, let me know

BTW, I got a spare w56 sitting in my garage along with a G5x.

But sorry to hijack your thread, good luck on id'ing that tranny and your playing around with a rebuild.
