No 4WD - need help diagnosing

I went out to play in the truck yesterday with a friend. We realized right away that there is no 4wd but we couldn't do much while out there so we took some easy trails and ended up getting stuck. After 2 hours we got her free but I've got to get the 4wd back!!!

Its a 92 V6. When I put it into 4H I can hear a click. The light does not come on and no 4wd. When I go into 4L I have low gears but no 4wd. When I go back to 2H I can hear the click again.

I've searched but it didn't help me, I need a starting point to diagnose the problem and the truck and 4wd systems are both new to me. Thanks.

Probably a split in one of your vacuum lines or one of your Vacuum Switching Valves has gone the way of Britney's sanity.

The actuatur has a tendecy to go out. I would check the vacuum lines first and then suspect the actuator. It can be by-passed, but if you dont have manual hubs your front third will be locked in.

There is a vacuum canister in the front passenger wheel well for the 4WD system. On mine the little connectors for the vacuum lines were rusted loose. I checked it by pulling off both lines and joining them together. If you rev up the engine and roll a little forward it will create enough vacuum without the canister. If it pops into 4WD then you know what your problem is. I just had new connectors braised on.

It's worth a try. I tested everything else before finding the problem.
