I have been in the market for a while for a 4runner and was wondering what transmission you all would recommend for daily driver/ weekend off roader a manual or a automatic?

Thats kinda a vague question, its all about personal preference.

I would always go with manual transmissions just because you have more control, its better offroad, and you can get the most out of your motor.

Autos are nice because you just press the gas and go.

It all comes down to what you feel comfortable driving.

 

I prefer manual transmissions, but that's as much a fun to drive thing as it is that I like having total control over everything involved with driving the truck. Simple stuff breaks less and is cheaper to fix. 5 speed will also net you better mileage.

 

Yeah I am stuck on this because I like both manual and automatic.

 

I've gone back and forth on this topic as well. I have an auto in my taco. Despite everybody saying they prefer manual on the trail, most will admit to being slightly jealous from time to time when I can creep up/down rocks and not stall the rig out numerous times.

On the flip side, some times I'm jealous of the ability to choose my gear and force it to shift when I want.

For DD, like others say, it's really personal preference. Manual is more fun to drive and gives you better gas mileage. But I can eat a burger and navigate traffic easier with my auto... what's most important to you?

For me, the rig I'm building will be manual and I'll be looking at a crawler to help with the stall/creep.
