my 22re is chugging under load, but you cannot feel it. bad fuel pump?

when im driving it, any speed, any RPM, it chugs. you can HEAR it, but you cannot feel it, which is bizarre. if i put it in neutral and rev, it PURRS perfectly. do these symptoms typically represent incorrect spark plugs, bad fuel pump, bad fuel filter, slipping clutch, etc? ? im leaning more towards the clutch, since it ONLY does it when its in gear, but what gets me is that the truck doesnt shake and it still accellerates. you just hear the engine chugging. im stumped. so i thought id ask the wise and knowledgable folks here at my home on the web. any takers?

if the clutch were going, the engine would speed up and the truck wouldn't.

but by 'chugs' do you mean gasoline or do you mean you can hear the air getting sucked through the air filter, kind of a throaty growl, and the engine is lacking power?
plugs may help, but I might lean towards the timing being off.

no, like, you hear the engine like, whats the best way to describe it.. you know when you drop the idle super low and it chugs, it has that sound, but minus the shaking. but minus the super crappy sound, it doesnt ping or anything. it makes that sound, but not nearly as bad. occasionally i have noticed if i put my foot into it suddenly, the rpms will drop, then shoot up. but its only done THAT once or twice. i havent really noticed a drop in mileage cuz of it, but it HAS dropped from 20mpg to around 15 when i set my air pressure at 32 instead of 35. i cant hear the air being sucked in. imagine when you rev it, the noise the engine makes winding up. then imagine that sound broken up by maybe a split second of silence, over and over again. ill get some sound clips of it tomorrow.

a little like a motorcycle.... hell it almost sounds like its flooding.... or misfiring... but no shaking....

i think you should take a sound clip or a video with your cell phone just for us to hear and or see what your talking about the only things that come to my mind are a few

my truck just did this as i over tighted the valves bad idea check that you never know

im sorry i just had a realy bad brain fart and lost all thinking power dont know why lol sorry

i say check that make sure there in spec not by hand lol

so it's the chugging like you're in too high of a gear, like trying to take off from a stop in 3rd, where once you get past the vibes and shudders, the engine is still loping?
what all's been done to the engine? (sorry I know it's written elsewhere, but just for 411's sake?)

ok now after listening to it more it may be the air gettin sucked in.... started happenin after i blew out my air filter with compressed air cuz i cant afford a new filter until saturday... too much air gettin sucked in?

no, wouldn't say too much air getting sucked in. the AFM would detect higher air flow and signal to the ECU accordingly, so it shouldn't affect anything, well other than maybe if the filter is torn, more dust getting in.

does the engine power seem down since you blew your filter?

a little bit, but it also started doin it when i hooked up my cold start injector. it worked for a few mins, but then started flooding the engine. so i unhooked it. its been doin it ever since.

you're absolutely certain the warm idle speed and timing are both correct?
what else has been done to the engine in the last say, 12 months?

im pretty sure the timing is right. keyword: PRETTY SURE. about the warm idle speed, i dont know. it does idle rather high, (1350rpms) and that causes the engine to lope when i have my foot on the brake. lets see, stuff thats been doneto the engine...

supra AFM installed for a few weeks, then removed
oil changes
spark plugs
new air filter (back in april)
a week or so ago it overheated... lol
replaced a hose from the block to the coolant temp sensor
and thats it
god i hate working so much and so hard... I DONT GET PAID ENUF!

okay, idle should be ~750-800.
stepping on the brake should have no affect on idle. (unless the idle isn't correct and the TPS isn't adjusted properly, or there's a problem with the brake booster or check valve)
nothing else really of interest...
oh ...the overheat...
fix that problem?

Dude, to fix my foot on brake=weird idle, i had my mom help me work on my truck ...sorta....but got that worked out...hope you get it figured out

yeah, i fixed it. however, now ive noticed my temp gauge will climb all the way up to the red, then suddenly drop. ive been keeping an eye on the coolant, and its not burning off. still green also. im not losing any. also when i have my lights on the temp gauge will fluctuate with the tach. bad ground? maybe. when i get a day off from work ill mess with the idle. how do you set the warm idle? and when setting idle, do you jump e1 and f1 or whatever the ports are?

temp gauge climbing- shouldn't be doing that. read this yet:

setting the idle doesn't require you jumping anything, just turning the screw, but when you adjust the idle, the timing should be re-set as well which means you need to jumper the connector- TE1 and E1

i could have sworn i bought that same t-stat from toyota... maybe overheating screwed it up, who knows. the timing should be at 5BTDC? i have a fancy hi tech timing light that i cant figure out, lol. its got a dial on the back with the timing numbers, and you turn it and the timing light changes locations on the harmonic balancer. its weird. lol. ill check everything tomorrow (my day off, thank god)
