22re Celica problem

I am looking at buying a 1984 Celica with a 22RE for a donor for a Lotus 7 replica project I got going on. Went to look at the car today and it starts for a couple of seconds, then it seems that it runs out of gas and quits. Seems to run on the start cycle with a high idle for just a couple of seconds. Owner says he has replaced the air-mass meter and he thinks it’s a fuel problem, either the filter or pump. Any ideas? I will be rebuilding the engine before it goes into the Lotus but I’d rather have it running right before I tear it down, that way if it doesn’t run when it goes back together I know it’s my fault. Lol.

Thanks guys.

k, idk if they have the diagnostics boxes on those, but im having this problem on my 91 truck becuase the sysytem isnt pressurized, i had a hole in my tank, so it would start then die.
could be cracked lines...fuel pump...prolly not the filter..but could be.
if it has a diagnostics box. do this
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...shtml#FuelPump
the fuel pump could just be gone, simple..

read the section that pops up, then go down one section and youll see pics of the diagnostics
