Question Never had a problem with my 96 4runner 12 years running...Engine knocking?

Okay, let's see if I can find a way to describe what's going on.

I started the truck and made a little noise, ran fine for 25 miles. Came out of the store and all of a sudden at the Wendy's drive threw...it's like the engine started knocking. Shut if off for awhile, called Hubby and he told me to drive it home. It drove fine except when I am idling it sometimes knocks. I am now scared to drive it..it's been sitting in my driveway for over a month now and don't know where to start investigating my issues.
It has 140k miles and is a 96.
Thanks for your help in advance...

Did you get a check engine light? That is where to start.

If I had to throw out a wild guess: Spark plug wires, plugs or ignitors.

Knocking? I would check the harmonic balancer first, bolt could have backed out....Could be a bunch other things,But you need to see if you can find source of noise, front of motor, rear, top end,low end....
