I have been having problems with my valves tapping like no tommorrow. I adjusted a good dozen times and with no luck. The clacking is still there. I went ahead and pulled the adjuster screws out all the way and there is flat spots on the bottom of the screws. I was wondering is it safe to sand them down a tad to make the flat spots go away or no. Has anyone done that or did you just buy new ones. The stealership wants 6 dollars per screw and there is eight. Not too expensive but for screws seems a bit high. Thanks in advance.

 

Get the screws at 1sttoyotaparts.com. I paid just a hint over $20 for all 8 a couple of years ago.

Yes, replacing all of the screws will make a world of difference in ensuring proper valve adjustment and lack of noise.

depending on how many miles are on it, maintenance, etc., the rocker shafts and / or arms themselves could be worn and there is no way to adjust that out. basically when worn, the valve adjustment is correct, but only because the wear in the arms/shafts causes a gap on the top where the shaft passes through the arm and then when the valve is closed, the arm can rattle on the shaft.

NO it wont .... dont wast your money . (unless you rebuild the whole top end )


UNLESS .. you surface the valve stem tops as well . You will be "applying" a new surface to a "warn" surface .. there is NO point !

 

Engh...I have to disagree a little with you slacker. True...it depends. If the valve stem tips are worn it won't, but mine were not worn. The adjuster studs were, though. When I put some new ones on, it did make a difference.

 

well i just ordered some today should be here tomorrow morning from the dealership. I will try replacing them and if a no go i will live with it until i can afford new rockerarms and the whole caboddle.. thanks all for the help.

BTW i did sand them down and it did quite it a bit...
