With some searching, I have reasonably assumed that since all (second-gen) 4Runners are six-lug, 2wd and 4wd models should be similar with regard to the front suspension. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the transmission crossmembers for both are bolted and not welded. With that said, shouldn't a 4x4 conversion be mostly bolt-in?

I do realize conversions require lots of time and money, but I'm only asking if it is feasible.

might as well get the 4x4. also i think the 4x4s have beefier frames and beefier trannys

 

The 2wd and 4wd "Trucks" definitely have different frames. But the 3rd gen 4Runners are the same for 2/4wd. Something tells me the 2nd gens are as well.

 

Get the 4wd and it will save you a lot of Advil!

 

If you look at a 2wd and 4wd side by side the suspension sub-frame look the same, and I'm pretty sure the mount's for the diff are there.
