running 22re or 22r
#3
I have a running 22RE. Needs timing chain and valve seals I think, and timing cover or front main has significant oil leak.
This engine is in Oklahoma in my pickup. I drive it regularly, over 4,000 miles this summer so far. Engine is thought to have about 150K miles on it and came from a vehicle with an automatic/ and or 2WD. Mine is a standard 4X4 and I have to keep the oil pan that came off mine originally.
Make offer.

dont buy an old 22RE with more than 60,000 miles on it.If you do, make them let you hear it run. Its useless. for 1,000 bucks and a few hours, buy a toyota service manual and build your own engine. I see guys here selling them with "needs a new timing chain" or "needs minor work" you dont want to deal with that . Its just going to cost you more in the end. someone has inevitably overheated it or something in those 140,000 miles or its going to be getting tired, losing power ect. just get a complete block and assembly and rebuild it yourself. I have a 1986 block that i know leaks oil. You can use any block from 1985 to 1995 as long as its the flat top and not dome top pistons. I think the dome pistons will cause you to have a knock. Anyways, let me know if you have more questions ive been building trucks like this for 5 years.

Some people need a quick (R&R) fix. That is what these engines are for. It doesn't take long to put a chain and seals on an already pulled engine. I agree that for long term, overhaul it, that is what I am doing. But the extra one I have runs, drives, and is ready to go. Overhauling takes a couple of weeks sometimes.
