How is the metal stamped plate inside the valve cover removed? If it's not supposed to be removed, then why do all gasket sets include a gasket for it? I posted several pics at http://www.ruralinternetservices.com/postpic to show what I'm talking about.

 

I've never received a gasket for that from Toyota or Felpro.

don't take it off and don't worry about that gasket, it's not going anywhere and is just there as a splash guard to prevent oil droplets being sucked up by the PCV

 

I know the purpose of the plate. Just wondered if anyone actually uses this gasket. I received another top-end turbo gasket set from engnbldr today and even it includes this gasket.

It looks like the baffle could be prised off and then put in place and have the stubs 'staked' to keep the baffle from separating.

 

Well, I've got a few spare valve covers here so I'm going to rip one of the baffles off and see what's underneath it. Stay tuned.

I think on my '84 block where the front of the valve cover was "rounded" it had bolts holding it on . . . . I might be wrong, but those baffles look familiar

I built a many a 22re and never used that gasket either! You had to drill it to get it off didn't you? Don't see how you would get it back on?

 

Yes, I milled the pads off. Don't you hate paying for something that you don't need and will never use, like this gasket? If I had a choice in the matter, I'd tell the gasket packers to keep that gasket and give me another intake plenum gasket. Seems that's the one I usually need more than the others.

 

Yup! Im with you on that one! Maybe I can trade all the ones I have back in for some head gaskets!

 

Weird... The valve cover set I got from Napa had that one in there, too. Never even thought about what it was for.

Oh well, now I know... it's for something else I paid for to take up room in my trash.

 

When I rebuild an engine I use it. I have found some nasty chunks in there.
Much easier if they bolt on (early cover).
