guys, i just had my stock front speakers replaced as well as the tweeters. I also put in a 4 channel amp to power all the speakers and now there is a humming/whining sound when i accelerate. it only does it when i acclerate and it fades when i left off the gas. i tried it with the stereo off and its gone!!
what would cause this? any ideas?? thanks!

 

sounds like alternator noise recheck all your grounds make sure u sand down the paint where your mounting them also run the rca wire away from the power wire

 

some sort of ground noise i'd figure, wheres the 4 channel grounded? you could also run a small gauge wire from that same ground point up to the ground in your deck that seems to solve odd noises most times.

 

thanks guys, i grounded the amp to the rear drivers side wheel well area. when i get back i will double check everything. i rushed to put all the stuff in before i left for 4th and during the drive the humming/whining was driving me nuts. i'll report back when i figure it out! thanks again and happy 4th weekend!

 

What deck and what amp?

 

i too have had that problem for over a year now.. it drives me nuts... the only thing i have found to stop it is to use a ground loop isolator. but i hate the way the speakers pop when i start the truck so the isolator has been removed. i have even tried running the small gauge (12ga) wire between the grounds on the amp and deck and i also use a 3 spot ground system ( seat bolt, seatbelt bolt, and a chassis welded nut) and i still have the hum. so good luck and if you fix it please let me know what you did..

 

i would not reccomend that you run a ground wire from the amp to the head unit. it is not suggested that you run your ground wire any longer than 1.5-2 feet. by running that long of a ground wire you are risking opening yourself up to more ground loop. it can also really depend on your set up, if you have gineric equipment you will get ground noise. as stated check all your grounds. make sure they have clean contact. also make sure your rca cables arent running along side your power wire or your remote wire as this will often create engine noise as well. where did you run your power wire? is it running right along side any major electrical compnents? enging whine can be picked up anywhere along the line.

k i will try to get as specific as possible.

1996 4runner limited
Front speakers are POLK DB6501
Rear speakers are stock (for now)
Amp is Polk PA500.4
Head unit is ALPINE 9831
Rockford Fosgate 8awg amp kit

Now, I ran the power and speaker wires/remote on along the drivers side all the way to the back. RCA line is ran up the passenger side. I grounded the amp to the rear drivers side wheel well area. I sanded it down with sand paper and took off all the black paint. The ground for the amp is probably 12 inches from the amp as I have the amp sitting in the trunk near rear bump(wheel well). Everything is buried under the "side steps" of both sides.
Now, I dont know what is causing the hum/whine because there is wire on both sides of the truck for my power windows/everything else that came with the truck. I am not sure if that will interfere. This is my first "DIY" for audio.
I can snap pics if you guys want. I plan on adding a basslink but I want to figure this out before I go adding more stuff to the equation. Hope that helps.

basically, just drop it in. I didnt use the supplied brackets and some glue to keep the tweeters in place is what i did. i also have the crossovers inside the doors. i think the thread has them under the seats but i wanted to keep everything neat. you can use double sided tape to keep them from flopping around in the doors.
Hope that helps. Im looking for speakers now to replace the rears. I have the db 5251 but i dont want to cut holes for the tweeters so im going to sell these and buy drop in coaxials. Good luck and take pics so whoever asks after this will have pics!! haha =D

 

update! found the issue! there was an "extra" set of cheap regular RCA's buried under the carpet that i didnt see! not sure if the twisted type of RCA's would have helped any. i must have not taken them out when i replaced my wiring to the rockford fosgates..stupid me.

 

I sometimes get a humming/whining sound from the passenger seat. Its mostly whining and not enough humming. It only seems to happen when my girlfriend is with me though.
