Can I swap my stock front 4.10 diff with a stock 4.56?
On a v6 4Runner with stock 4.10 gears - can I swap a front carrier (differential) with a stock diff with 4.56's? Did the make V6 4runners wth stock fron 4.56? Or was it only 4 cylinders? And if so will that still work for a complete swap out?
Thanks

So they did make v6 4runners stock with front 4.56's? There are a few front ifs diffs at local salvage yards that say they are 4.56 but I'm leery that they know what they are talking about. If I went an looked at the diff how can i confirm the gear ratio and if it was from a v6 or 4cyl.? And do i have to worry any of those might not have the ADD?
Thanks
John

If you are talking 3rd gens....
The 4.56 was RARE. Used only in 4cyl, unless special ordered IIRC.
If you swap the front diff, you will have to swap the rear as well.

So if what you are saying is correct - then the local slavage yards that list the diff coming from a 3rd gen 4runner 3.4 L V6 with 4.56's - are probably worng. But if they are listing them as coming from a 4 cylender - it could possibly have 4.56's - correct?
Any reason I wouldn't want a 4cyl front dif in my v6?

Along these same lines, i have (at least the diff code says i do) 4.91 gears on mine. I want to get an e-locker but i don't want to drop my gearing either.
Can i swap my stock gears with an elocker so i keep the stock Ratio but get the elocker?
And if so, got any cheap elockers sitting around?

texas Ace - If you have 4.30's (which is pretty common) you can easily find a used 4.30 geared elocker third member. But hopefully you're aware it's not a straight swap if you don't already have the locker - you'll have to modify your axle housing.
go to http://car-part.com/ and make sure you select CARRIER as the part you're looking for (not differential )- you will get more results that way. I see 4.30 e-lockers starting at $300.

And yes i am sure i was told 4.91, i asked severl times, are you sure? and was told yes. I was surprised as i never knew toyota made 4.91. I was also told that toyota never made an elocked with those gears, which i thought would explain why i don't have one.
As for the code, just to stem any confusion here is a picture, look for yourself, maybe i told him the wrong code...

Well thats odd....anyways, your axle code is A03A, which should be a 3.91
Toyota didn't use a 4.91. Must not have talked to me
lolol
So, to clarify, A03A is a 3.91
And I am assuming you do not have the rear locker?

And no, i don't have a rear locker. Though with seeing that my gears are that bad i might want to re-gear while i am doing this if i can't find a locker with those gears. Who knows, or i will just switch the gears over for now and re-gear later.

Ok, must have been some mis-comunication then lol.

looking up your code you should probably have either 4.10 or 4.30 - but I don't know. The best think to do is go out and jack up one rear tire. mark the drive shaft and mark the tire. Spin the tire 1 revolution while counting how many times the drive shaft spins - less than 4 = 3.91 a touch over 4 = 4.10 or more like 4 1/4 turn = 4.30 etc. It's not 100% accurate but will easily tell you if its under 4 or over 4.
Also you can buy complete rear axle assemblies (with e-locker) off car-part.com too.
Just search for "rear axle assy" put in what you're looking for, etc...
