Any recommendations on where you would buy a new TPS? I was thinking of going to a dealership, but just wanted to know if anyone has tried a 3rd party and has success? Please post cost.

Search online for a dealer selling at reduced costs - you can normally save 30-40% from what you'd pay at the Toyota parts counter.

 

Bought mine on eBay ($10).. just to see how it worked. The guy cut the attached connector so I could measure easily with the ohmmeter.

As a by product of that I realized there was nothing wrong with mine, nor the cheap one I bought on eBay.

The problem was the idle seating not not quite fully returning to the idle fully closed position. The setting on the TPS is a knife edge sharp setting.. either giving the ECM the idle position as engaged, or not. Easy to fix once I understood the problem.

 

Are you referring to the butterfly not closing all the way in the TB?

 

I'm referring to the idle screw/plate contact. I could put pressure on it.. the TPS would register the correct resistance. The TPS was set so critical to that last couple of thousands of movement you could get by physically pressing on the seating... that any resistance there would prevent the TPS from detecting the idle position.

 

Btw, if you have any doubt as to whether the TPS is the problem (or its setting), you can disconnect the TPS connector (carefully so you don't break the tabs). You will get an error, but if the original symptoms go away... the problem is the TPS, or its setting.
