Changing Oil, diffs, transmission, tcase, oil filter, and changing brake fluid soon. Have an 88 with the 3.0. Saw the site with all the fluids someone recomended and the amount, but like I said I have a 3.0. Will be driven from heat of texas to alaska, using mobil 1 for motor oil (more commonly found) figured 5 qts should be enough. Also using pure for the oil filter.

I'm looking to do all amsoil, and would like to run the same fluid in transmission and transfercase in case it leaks. It's a manual transmission. If not, should I use the diff fluid in tcase and _____ in the transmission?

How many quarts of fluid do I need for the diffs, what type, how much and what type for the tranny and tcase?

Figured I'd use generic brake fluid.

Found a shop that would change all of them (not including oils) and advance my distributor to 12 degrees for 150. From what I here oil filter is a pita to get to and I don't have to deal with all the old fluids.

Diffs take about 3 quarts

 

In your case you'll want to use the following:

Manual Transmission & Transfer case: Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle fluid 75w90 GL4.

Front & Rear Differentials: Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 Gear Lube GL5.

As for the exact quarts, you'll have to look in your owners manual if you still have it but for my 93 (not sure how similar 88's are to 93's but I'd imagine if you got the V6 they should be fairly similar) it looks something like this. I found these numbers to be pretty much bang on from what the tech who did my fluids told me (and I bought just over what I needed as per the #'s below). However Jay351, who I bought the fluids for, said he actually needed a bit more than what the spec's I quoted him were and he has a 91 v6 4x4 with the manual like mine.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION & TRANSAXLE FLUID 75W90

Manual transmission: 3.0 Liters/3.2 quarts
Transfer case: 1.1 Liters/1.2 quarts



SEVERE GEAR 75w90

Rear Diff: 2.2 Liters/2.3 quarts
Front Diff (ADD): 1.9 Liters/2.0 Quarts
Front Diff (no ADD): 1.6 Liters/1.7 Quarts

 

Yes, infact in the rear diff I needed almost 3 quarts to get it filled up. ( I had swapped my 3rd though)

T-case needed over 1.5 quarts

Tranny needed over 3.5 quarts.

Im not sure what happend but thats how much it took till it came out of the fill hole.
Just make sure you buy an extra quart of each just to be safe.

EDIT: Screw it. Was going to become and amsoil dealer, seems preferred customers save the same. Only place sells it locally is a farm supply store and they don't have a lot.

 

Well Redline is 93.50 from summit, what I need, shipped. Amsoil, with the pc, is 116 shipped. From a lot of media it seems amsoil is better... But... 20 bucks... LOL. Going to see what oil price is at farm supply tomorrow. Might beat all.

 

The one reason I am a big fan of Amsoil is because everytime I have emailed them with very specific questions, they have answered my specific questions and then some (as opposed to when I have contacted Mobil 1 in the past via email). I also like how Amsoil seems to have a pretty good range of exclusive fluids for specific component(s), and they also back up their fluids with warranties. Keep in mind though that whether you go Redline or Amsoil fluids, either will be far superior to conventional lubricants and going with one over the other probably won't make or break your rig in all honesty.
Just keep in mind you'll probably want the GL4 fluid in your transmission, and since you said your transfer case leaks, in your transfer case as well. It's not as slippery as the GL5 fluids which are better for your differentials.

 

Ok, ordered new fluids, drained all current ones. Chose red line for some reason. Doing diff breather extensions, thought about doing it for transfer case and tranny. Then realized I have no idea how in the hell to fill up the transfer case and tranny. I figure front and rear diff go thru the breather hole, no clue on the others.

 

Front and rear diffs tranny and t-case get filled in the appropriate fill plug. Usually about halfway up the side. IIRC its a 24mm bolt for both drain and fill. Fill untill it spills out the fill hole. Oh BTW make sure you can get the fill plugs loosend. Mine took one hell of a breaker bar.

Hey Jay no worries. I guess you can drive around with a slightly low front diff for a bit. I can probably drop you off some on Monday if you need any which I'm going to imagine you will.

 

yep! I have even used 4wd with mis-matched gears. Stupid snow covered roads. Im not sure how long I will be busy on monday, have quite a few things to fix on my truck. EGR, rear brake sticking, front diff blah. I could give you a call on monday, possibly meet you at crappy tire.

 

I need to remove my EGR too. Seems fairy simple, everyone said just plug the two places it bolts too then plug the vacuum line that goes to it, but honestly it seems mine has two vacuum lines going to it?
