I did the ISR mod 2 weeks ago and my gas mileage has gone WAY down. I was getting 19 mpg b4 ISR now I'm down to 16. I may have to put everything back to stock :cry:

I was reading through the ISR mod pages, and was wondering: honestly just how poorly could of possibly the greatest car manufacturer made the intake be on possibly the best offroader?

And the 0.2 second improvement in 30-70mph (or was it for deckplatemod?) is so minuscule that it can be considered the error margin of a DIYer.

JK. They didnt design it for an aggressive user. They designed the intake for use by the most common consumer of the 4Runner. Im sure if they were aiming it at people like us, they would have installed something similar to the ISR or redesigned the whole intake.

Negative, baseless opinions not withstanding, this complaint rarely occurs after someone does the ISR mod. Could it be that you've been a bit "heavy footed" as of late?

If you drive as you did before the mod, your gas consumption should not have changed. If you reset the ECU after doing the mod, the fuel economy will suffer until the ECU re-learns your driving habits.

Your complaining bout a 19 to 16 drop? I wish I had even 16! Im rollin on 35" tires without the mod and only get close to 10 MPG. I think your issue is not the MOD killing your lileage yet your foot. If I just did the MOD i'd be heavy on the throttle to. I would wanna see what she can do. I seriously doubt you did the MOD and go on Sunday drives down main street. Tell us the whole story so we can say "see I told yuh so"

Dr. Zhivago, I'm not 100% sure about this mod, as I don't have 2 identical 4Runners one with a resonator and the other removed. Even if I did I doubt I could jump between them fast enough to notice the 5% or so improvement. But if we discuss this purely hypothetically....

1. Does this have any scientific backing like consistent dyno runs maybe?

2. The 2 primary and explainable factors that contribute to this power improvement is (I) No entrapped hot air (II) Air resonance. Correct?

Mind adding the math behind those dimension to the article? I'd be very interested

 

I have not yet, I have been waiting to hear what is suggested for gears on mine. Im clueless! Im running 35's and its an automatic.

 

i've done the ISR mod and really, i think the reason ur MPG went down was because u kept wanting to hear the mod, if u know what i mean , im on my 3rd tank and it actually increased mpg. maybe when my ECU adjusts it might decrease but i really dont see any difference

 

While I don't know if the gas mileage went UP after I did the mod, I know it didn't drop (on it's own) by 3mpg!

I used to run in the high 14's. Now, after the deckplate, ISR, SMT-5, electric fans, a freeflow exhaust, cleaning the throttle body and running a bottle of fuel system cleaner, I regularly turn 18.5 - 19.5mpg. And it's been like that for at least 10 tankfulls.

I don't know which one helped the most, and I don't have the "wanna" to pull each piece off to test it.

 

Actually <96 Runner> actually has some hard evidence of the improvement. If you would kindly do a SEARCH on the isr then you will see. So there is proof that this improves throttle response and performance.

 

This is exactly where I was going, the improvement is due to messing with the computer's sensors and not the shape or flow of tubing. If you make your engine ping then fill it up with premium, might as well advance stock timing instead and get even more power.

 

Blue go with 5.29's and while you have it apart install a locker too

 

How will that drive in town compared to climbing? Any idea's on pricing for a job like that?

 

Been out of pocket and not on board for some time now. I guess one reason is that I am so happy with the way my truck is running. I have no-o-o problems other than the fact that I still can not get a bar from Addco that fits properly... but one is coming

I did the ISR mod and contrary to what Galen may have thought about the effectiveness of this mod on a SC'd engine, I've been very happy with the results. Response and performance are improved slightly and gas mileage is not effected. As an asside, for anyone who had been following my troubles, I also went back to the OE plugs and gap. Mileage is between 18-5 and 19.5 around town and 21.5 - 22 on the highway. My performance is seamless now and I don't even use the ECT because it makes the performance too skidish and will effect the gas mileage slightly. As soon as I get a bar that fits the rear the way I expect this new bar to fit, then I will reinstall the TRD exhaust and see if that raises my torque curve a little... which will be fine with me.

I have done this MOD on both our 02' 4-Runner and 02 Tacoma. Both trucks showed imediate and "Very Noticable" performance gains.

Once I finally lightened up on the accelerator after enjoying the added increase in performance my gas milage is currently 20-22.5 MPG for mixed city and highway driving with the 4-Runner.

 

I did the ISR on my '99, and my MPG went down from 19 to 14.5. I also had a HUGE increase in noise over the deckplate mod. I replaced the original box, and on the highway down to the beach Thursday night with the cruise set on 80, I got 19.2 for over 200 miles. I don't think the pipe will be going back on. It did give me much better throttle response and power, but I just couldn't justify it with a 4.5 MPG loss for 2 tanks of gas...

 

very odd....on a same engine one pipe could make that much of difference. o well it works well for me so no complaints here

 

OF you guys that are showing no noticable ill effects of the mod. How many of you live in geographic locations where you have to run you AC full time? I noticed BAMACHEM lived somewhere down south as well as me. Both have 99's and show the same results.
