Remove it, or block it off. The EGR recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine (apperantly) to cool off the engine and reduce emissions. I would prefer not to have dirty exhaust routed back into my intake, thats why you get that black gunk in your throttle body.

The EGR system on these trucks did more bad then good, they were still figuring out all the kinks.

I left my EGR on instead of doing a block off plate. If you want, take off all the emissions crap you don't need. Looks alot cleaner:

as long as its not stuck open or anything like that you can just disconect all of the vacuum lines going to it and its just as good as taking it off or block plates. its mainly just an emissions thing and when it fails and starts sticking it will cause problems.

btw EWAYota you have a really clean engine bay, how did you do the valve cover and intake in the blue like that?

if your truck is running like crap, failing emissions and so on then the egr could be causing your problems, but if it runs fine then its most likely working just fine

The truck will not pass an emissions test with the EGR removed or malfunctioning. There is a visual inspection as well as the tailpipe test.

OP says he has no emissions testing in his neck of the woods...

in PA, with my Reconstructed Title, I don't have to pass emissions either. Is there a thread on here on what all we can yank from our engine bays? Mine is looking mighty cluttered and I'd like to take care of that.. And if I get some extra performance to boot, well then, that is a perk.

well i already have the intake off because the gasket was leaking and i thought since it was all off i would leave it off and just block it off...i read somewhere that the easiest thing to do is get a coke can and drill holes for the block off plate and then put the gasket on...maybey??? i will try and see...thanks all

yeah the coke can thing works if you dont want to deal with removing the whole egr or buying block off plates.

My 89 was running like crap but it failed inspection for reasons other than emissions.
When I fixed the physical stuff, I replaced spark plugs, wires, cap, and it was running better than ever. However, it failed emissions. I took out the egr and cleaned it thoroughly, and put it back through, and it made a significant difference in the emissions..and it passed.

We sprayed it with Rustoleum Mettalic Blue, then all the spots that are the original silver/metal we cut the paint away with a razor. Then went over it with a few coats of clear.
