What's the difference between a regular pickup and a hi-lux?

The specific name "Hilux" is no longer used in the US, but thats what the trucks are called outside the US, rather than just "Truck"

 

right on, I was just wondering if there was an actual difference, or if hilux was just what they called the early pickups. thanks!

oh oh oh lol you all seem to come to me because im a kiwi lol. well umm depends what sorta hilux your talking about. theres hilux double cab um single cab and flat deck umm theres extra cab but not many of them around here umm there a cupple more aswel i think you all know that a hilux surf is a 4runner to so yea ask away

 

The Hilux is a 1-ton pickup whereas the Tacoma is a 1/2-ton pickup. They do share a lot of features but the ladder frame and suspension parts are different in a way that the Hilux has a higher payload capacity.

 

The Hi-Lux was released everywhere, including the US in 1969

in 1975, in the US, the Hilux name was replaced by "Pickup", whereas the name remained elsewhere

In 1995.5, the Pickup was "replaced" by the tacoma. In other parts of the world, the hilux is still on the market, though as mentioned above, it has differences.

I believe that it was 91 when the foreign Hilux was forced to get IFS. Wikipedia.org has more info, it's really a great resource for cars or written reports.

But, my question is this: Solid axle foreign Hilux's/pickups, what is the height of the suspension? Brian894x4.com had steering clearance issues when too little lift was used on his SAS. How high is stock ride height on a Solid Axle Foreign Hilux? My 94 pickup is 13.5-15 stock from the wheel lip to the fender with IFS. How much lift on the front springs would get you to stock solid axle Hilux height? You see 3", 4", 5" lift springs on SAS kits, but what would you use to just have a foreign stock ride height of a solid axle Hilux?

 

i'll have to dig out my tltle but i think my 80 was titled as hilux.the only thing i know it had was the volt and oil guage below the heater on the tranny hump

I have HILUX badges on my truck that I bought in Australia back in 2004. My truck is a SAS rig, and will be sporting a 2RZ-FE which is one of the engines used overseas in the HILUX trucks, so can I call my truck a HILUX?

The Pirate thread eases my worries of going farther than stock height when converting to a solid front axle. The link above shows wheel base, height to frame, height to crossmember/belly, and tire size. My frame is at about 20" with stock IFS. Many guys on the Pirate board are very close to my height, improving their center of gravity (COG) for serious off roading. You only have to be high to crawl the mall. That's very reassuring information.

 

there is a huge difference between the pick-up and the hilux. if you want to see a Hilux in action, go to youtube and type in Toyota Hilux, there are tons of videos there for you to see the difference.

 

Same thing as the U.S. Toyota pickup or Tacoma, but maybe you're seeing something I don't.

It's called a pickup in the US/Canada and a hilux everywhere else. Americans just haaavee to be different but not better. Kinda like SAE vs Metric... what gives lol.

The US toyota pickup is a Hilux but was never offerend in a quadcab or w/ a diesel in the US. I'm not sure if Toyota made a factory camper or flatbed for the US market but I do know the 2wds had a dualie version.


Like the Toyota FJ/BJ40 and 45's and the HZJ series of bada55 toyota trucks they still produce in other countries the US got the shaft on selection. Damn safety standards =(
