New Here, Throttle Response issues

I just picked up a 92 pickup with a 22re and a 5spd. I replaced the timing chain, gears and guides and it ran great for a day or so. I was driving it down the street the other day and it started bucking and carrying on. I pulled over and got under the hood and held the throttle in a steady position and the engine reved up and down and didn't stay at the RPM I had the throttle set at. If I push the gas pedal to the floor and hold it just revs to 4500 and then drops off to around 3000 then it revs back to 4500 and it will continue to do this as long as you hold the pedal down. I've checked the coolant level because I was told his could cause driveability issues and I also unplugged the TPS and it acted the same with the exception of it idled a little higher. but as soon as you push the gas it does the same as before. don't have much in the truck and I am trying to keep it that way for now. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need to adjust the throttle position sensor. Its not seeing idle as closed. so it has no reference point. get the FSM and find the 2 contacts for Idle and adjust till its 0ohm or close to it for idle. there should be a link to a FSM here or ttora may have one.

Well my neighbor and I used his snap on scanner and we checked every sensor, coil, and even made sure the TPS was set right. It still did it. We checked fuel pressure with a injection test kit and had the gauge on it while I was driving it and it did its thing. The fuel pressure stayed constant and never fluxuated. We did however determine that there is bad gas in the tank. The fuel smells like turpentine instead of the usual gas smell. I am gonna run some fuel treatment through it and put some high octane gas in it at the same time and see if it straightens out. Hopefully it will.

if there's a lot of that nasty gas in there, the treatment won't do. Gas starts losing octane in about a month & goes down from there until what you end up with is that lacquer, turpentine smelling crap. IF it's over 1/2 a tank a that stuff, try draining as much out as you can & just fill it up with some good gas.

That TPS is a really important thing to check out. Mine was just a little off on my 3.0 and getting it tweaked was just what the doctor ordered. Just takes an ohm-meter with (I suggest) gator clips on the leads.

Take care, Chief!

I definitely think it is a fuel problem. After checking everything out I filled it up and it ran great for a few days until the fuel gauge got down to around 3/4 of a tank and it started doing it again. I filled the tank and it stopped doing it. Then today I was driving it and it started doing it again and the fuel level is right around 3/4. Well the truck barely had any gas in it when I got it so I would think that the majority of the bad gas has been used up. But I will be dropping the tank monday and seeing if there is a problem with the pick up and replacing the sock filter on the fuel pump. The TPS was dead on so I don't think that is a problem and being that it runs fine when it has a full tank of gas I am starting to think it is a fuel pick up issue.
