HELP!!! my valve train won't shut up!

I'm at a nasty loss. i have a 94 pickup that has the elusive 22re with a horrid noise coming from the valve area. i think... i replace the long block less than 4000 miles ago and i live in the great state of wyoming were not a single shop will touch anything that involves the word "warranty"
so the story goes... I was cruising home from a night of camping then BAM! it sounded like someone stuck a stack of cards in the spokes of my ten speed. i have taken the valve cover off and can find nothing immediately wrong. all my valves are in tolerance, .008 gap for intake, .012 gap for exaust, none of the bearings are discolored. i'm dumbfounded. i'm waiting for a neighbor to bring some oil splash guards so i can watch it run with the cover off.
and all i want to do is sell the truck. and if i can fix it properly i can get that much more out of it. any advise would be very much appreciated. thank you
