1st Gen Roll Bar Removal

I found a few 1st 4runners w/ roll bars at a local junkyard today and I'm gonna remove one and install it in my 3rd gen this week. Are there nuts on the bottom of the roll bar bolts or are they just secured to the floor pan? I'm just trying to figure out how much of a PITA this thing is gonna be to remove.

nuts are welded to underside of floor.

its realy easy i took mine out to paint it just like 16 or so 12 or 14 mm bolt

Yeah, I have not been able to get one out with the roof still on. It's 4 bolts for the rollbar and 14 I think for the top. Last one I pulled in the junkyard I just unbolted the bar and the top, slid the bar to the back of the truck, then stood on the tailgate and lifted the back of the top while pulling the rollbar out (so I didn't have to remove the top completely).

it is indeedn 14 12mm bolts for the top.
I cant recall the bolt size on the bar, sorry.

I had mine out to paint as well, but the top was off when I did it.

My question is where is this junkyard with 1st generation 4runners sitting around. What a find!

I've only seen that one.. It's 12mm on the roll bar too.

I planned on pulling the roof off, the tailgate is broken and won't open. I only saw 4 bolts holding the roof on. I'm gonna have to crawl in the door, unbolt the roof, then I'm just gonna flip it over the truck, hopefully it isn't too heavy!

Chesapeake, VA...I've been looking for awhile, I found two first gens in there, with the roll bars just collecting dust. It was an exciting find......Was looking for the inclinometer/altimeter too, were those only in the Hilux Surfs?

Around Denver I can always find 1st Gen 4runners. I decided I was going to build my cage off of 1st gen 4runners went out to the local pull n saves and had 3 bars in a couple of hours.

Just got back from the junkyard! I unbolted the roof and flipped it off the truck, took me about 20 minutes to finish the job. It has a few surface rust spots and some scratches, some I'm gonna sand it down, and give it a fresh coat of paint once the fabrication is finished. Its in pretty good shape for being 20 years old though. I might do some cutting tonight, then finish the install this weekend hopefully.

Now you need to find an authentic Toyota pad to put back on it. Someone had one on Ebay a few weeks back for $20.

Hey Guapo, try and get some pics of how you fix the bar up. I'm curious, are you going to take the old stuff off of it? I'd like to see how you do the install, inside and under. I was going to do this mod, but I was leery to start cutting my carpet and blowing holes through the metal.

Yep, already found a pad on ebay for $18. As for the install I'll take some pics. I plan on bolting it on top of the carpet. Only thing I might have to cut is the cargo area mat, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

So I stumbled upon this post looking to answer the question of whether the roll bar can be removed without removing the canopy. It looks like the answer is no.

I'll be Line X'ing my bed in a few weeks and it will a cleaner job with the roll bar out of the way. I'm thinking that perhaps if the rear seats are removed I may at least be able to have on it's side and tilted up off the floor enough - what do you guys think?

@stanz

I am not sure how detailed and clean you want to linex your runner, but IMO it will be much easier to linex your runner with the top removed as well as the seats and the roll bar. You also need good air circulation when linexing.
