Looking to buy a 1989 Pickup

Hey all!

New to the forums and new to Toyota's. Was hoping I could get some advice from you on buying the above mentioned 1989 Pickup. From reading the forums I know its the 6th generation which likely had a lot of stuff fixed from the previous gen, but may also have new problems. Owner says its has 213,000 miles, 5 speed (transmission rebuilt at 207,000mi) with 22RE engine (152,000mi on the rebuilt motor), and a new clutch. Anyhow, are there any defects or major problems to look for on that year? I figure if anyone would know, you guys would. Thanks very much for your help!

I would look at the frame really well..... Look by where the rear leafs attach to the frame. For some reason the frames on the 4x4 rust from the inside out. Other than that the 22re is a good reliable engine

79-83 4x4 = 1st Gen Truck
85-88 4x4 = 2nd Gen truck
89-95.5 4x4 = 3rd Gen
95.5-2004 = 4th Gen--Early Tacoma (there might be a break somewhere around the 1999-2000ish tacoma too)
2005+ = Late Gen Tacoma.....

Than 4Runners have their own Genealogy too...

If you only include the 4x4s then you are right, but going all the way back in Toyota history, I think you get to add a few more generations to the list.
