1997 4Runner Steps & Wheel Flares

I just bought a '97 4Runner SR5 with side steps and wheel flares. I'm off roading this thing, so the side steps have to go. I removed them, and unfortunately some sand and grit had gotten between the front of the step trim and the body on both sides behind the front wheels, rubbing down to the bare metal, which is starting to rust. I'm going to clean it up as best I can and paint it, but I think if a '97 had wheel flares and no side steps, there would be an additional trim piece covering the area where the front of the side step trim was. Anyone know if this is the case? Is there a website with body trim I can look at to see what it would cost, if this is true?

BTW, PM me if you want some really nice 1997 Side Steps.

I have a 97 that had running boards/sidesteps along with the black wheel flares I think you are talking about. After 10 years, I also have paint wear from the wheel flares and also decided to remove the running boards. As for the area that is now exposed after the running board removal, you will need to order a set of front mud guards that will fill that area. Also after you clean up the rust behind the flares, do this mod to it.

Good luck!

Are the mud guards a factory item?

Part #?

I called the local Toyota dealer about the lower flare extension/mudflap for a '97 without side steps. This is an SR5 with the flat black flares.

He said there was no such part, that there would be a totally different flare all the way around if there were no side steps.

I don't believe him. Does anyone know the reality on this? Can you give me a part number or point me to a website with exploded diagrams?

Thanks.

I just double checked with my Toyota Dealer and they describe these mudguards as "fender flare mudguards w/o running boards".
