Nicked the end of rear axle while changing seal

Grr.... I was changing the rear axle seal and using a seal puller that you put one end in the seal and hit a bar on the other end with the hammer. It pivots on the end of the axle housing. I had a piece of wood under it to protect the axle and the wood split. I now have two small nicks on the very end of the axle. Hoever I cannot figure out what seats there. The axle housing seats on the outside with the "o" ring and the inner seal that I was replacing is supposed to keep fluid on the other side. Am I correct in assuming that a small nick on the very end is not something to try to correct?

i had a similar incident resulting in a nicked tube/housing. 3 years later. no issues. obviously since we don't have photos to compare, it could be different, so, YMMV.
