Interesting, and nice to know straps will probably break before the shackles. Flying bits of strap aren't likely to kill anyone.

Shackles are damn strong ( so are spansets), I use them when rigging in film/AV. I've been told that the straps (spansets for us) have a safety factor of 7 built into them.

They can handle very heavy weights, from a few hundred kilograms to several tonnes. In the UK, where strict safety standards apply, shackles ensure that loads are lifted without risk of slipping or breaking.S
