Thumbs down Venting Frustration: The 3.0 Knock

Nothing really technical to say here, I've searched..... I know what I'm up against....I fear the worst.

I haven't driven my 4runner in about 10 days. I commute 100 miles daily and swapped out for my GF's jetta for gas mileage purposes. I walked her to the car this morning and sent her on her way.... she started the Runner up and what did I hear.... the most god awful knock/ tap/ rap metal on metal pounding coming from under the hood. My heart sunk.

I had been talking to her last night about how her jetta was running (she didnt really care) and inquired about the Yota. When I asked her this morning about the noise, she told me she just thought it was that loud. (I could hear it from inside my 3rd story aprt with windows closed and AC on.)

Long story short.... its in the shop getting diagnostics. I popped the hood briefly (late for work as is) and tried to convince myself it was coming from the top of the motor, but I fear the worst. Im workin 65 hours/ week right now, so if there's anything that can be done, I anticipate it'll be a job for the pros.

Just looking to vent a little. I can't blame her, but I know I'd have been on it the second I heard.

Little background: Oil change 200 miles ago, nothing unusual. HG about 14K miles ago.

Wrench just called.... claims rod bearing.

Would that not throw the knock sensor CEL?

R.I.P.

Now looking for 3rd gens, 3.4.

Rod bearings won't affect the KS because it looks for a very SPECIFIC frequency of knock (pre-ignition).

Thanks for everything you guys. I've been lurking around here for sometime now. Hopefullly I'll be in the 96 -2002 soon.

You know, I really love 2nd gen.... I think its the tailgate. Wish I could find one with a 3.4.
