95 4Runner, V6, 4x4, Factory A/C

Recently the bearing on my A/C clutch gave and I had to replace it. While taking it apart a peice of the metal that holds the snapring for the pulley broke off. (i guess the heat got it)

i replaced the face of the compressor, but in doing so i had to let the freon
out. i vacuumed the system back down to -25 for 45 minutes. then i let it sit for about 25 minutes to make sure of no leaks, which there were none.

when i tried to charge the system it accepted about 1/3 of a 12oz can and would not take any more. the low side reached 70 psi, while the high side reached only 50psi. the compressor instantly kicked on, but there is only pressure and not enough freon in the system to possibly work.

ANY IDEAS!?!?!?!

 

Yo,
Put a huge fan in front of the radiator during the charge process. Run the idle speed up to about 1500 and put the freon can in hot water. I presume you are charging the low side? Read the can, upright is gas and upside down is liquid but check the can to be sure. Gas will take forever.

I had sorta the same problem when i was trying to get mine working, finally i ran out of money and gave up on it 2 years ago. I replaced everything on mine but the exspanion valve.. but never got it working

 

Charging it through the low side you want to leave the can upright. On the low side of the system the freon is in its gas state, the high side is liquid. If you charge the low side with the upside down you can very easily overcharge your system and damage things before you know it.

 

i was charging through the low side with the can held upright, but it still would not except the freon. i tried three different cans, and two different dispensers.

with the high side creating more pressure than the low, would that indicate a blockage in the system?

 

adding freon with cans takes forever. like posted above, hot water, droplight next to the can will help take it in. raise the idle up some. high side should be considerably higher than the low side. probably be somewhere in the 250 range on the high side, and maybe 30-50 on the low side. exact numbers for high and low are hard to target, it kind of depends on ambient temperature too. it may take like 1/2 and hour for a can to go in. be patient.
