I keep beating myself up over this! Please give me ANY AND ALL opinions PLEASE! I am looking for a 4runner that I can use for an occasional daily driver, but primarily to go moderate off-roading/camping, snow driving in the winter. I have owned several 1st gen 4runners, but never an automatic tranny (which this is). I know this is a good deal...for the money...but what do you guys think...I need the truth no matter how hard it is!

Auto with a 22RE, garbage.................. Give him 3k and put in a manual.

Sounds like a good deal, don't expect great gas milage or to burn any speed records. Have you test driven it yet?

 

Sounds kinda high. Personally I wouldn't go over $3k, especially if it has body damage.

well in canada that there would be a great deal.. it seems like yotas are so much cheaper in the states! (wish i had imported one lol).. i paid 4500 for my 89 with moderate rust and not as many good mods as u have and that was a decent deal out here (BC Canada).. So for me id say 3800 go for it and buy urself a manual tranny and swap it....any canadians wanna back me up here? lol

 

I'm in kind of the same situation. I'm down the hill from the Rubicon and an equal distance from the bay area, where everything is redicuosly overpriced. So 3800 seems good to me, but I'd still pass on it because of the a/t.

thats a great deal for what you described i'd say if you can get it and try it on the trail you might fing auto tran to be a nice change, examp: you are on a steep grade going up, and stop half way how do you get your right foot from the brake to the gas while letting off the cluch? in an auto thats an easy sich, and if you dont like it modify it to your liking and sell the rebuilt trany for 200.

 

Deal. Its an 87 runner in good shape with some cool aas mods. Buy it with all swiftness. Summertime, no top, PIMPIN!!

 

 

Some pics might help the decision. I don't think $3k is a bad deal at all, AT on the trail would be nice, I think as far as getting out of it's own way, the AT and 5.29 gears might be acceptable with the 33" tires. Gas mileage probably not great.

it even has a clinometer! i wheel my 93 auto pretty hard and the a/t works very well. ive wheeled with a guy with an auto libby then traded up to an 07 tj stick and he liked the a/t much better.

give it a try, you might find it works for you.

I'll never buy another automatic car/truck so i say no deal. Hold out for the beauty of an 85 down the road. I wish i did because its for sale 10mins away while I sit with a 3.0 garbage motor with a bend rod, IFS, and $2000 in parts in my basement for SAS.

Only thing I don't like on it is the AT, especially behind the 4cyl...but hey, ya gotta buy what works for ya. I primarily wheel a 4 spd, but have an automatic in another bronco, and I like it real well too...'specially when I have to have the wife bring it to me to pull my main wheeler out... wheeling with a manual takes skills she ain't got.

It looks nice, and the mods are great...but what YOU have to ask yourself, is can you live with the basic setup, i.e. engine/tranny combination. Everything else is bolt on stuff.

I just bought a clean, stock '88, with 4cyl/5spd, and only paid $2k, including tax and license...and there's another up the street from me right now, 4 inches of suspension lift and needs a clutch, for $1600.

My advice? If you have to ask us, you don't like it well enough to buy it...so don't.

I'd wait till you find the one you'd kill to buy, and had no questions in your head or heart, then jump in with both feet.

 

Seems like it has some good, well thought out mods for wheeling which may mean one of two things.

1. You'll have some fun offroad in a capable rig that's ready to go without much more money needed to invest.

2. The last guy wheeled the heck out of it, so it's had a hard life and he is "retiring" it for a reason.

Take a real close look at it for damage from impact or general harder than normal use. See if it drives straight and get a thorough understanding of why the owner is moving on. What is the reason to let go a vehicle he has obviously put good money and time into?

Maybe he just wants a manual... or maybe he can't believe it's still together after his last run.

If things check out, I'd consider it a good vehicle for the price. As others have said, you may actually like the auto. I had no real issues with the '91 22re extended cab with auto that I was driving before my current vehicle.

However... ultimately the 5spd 22RE is the better combo in my opinion.
