Color matching SR5 flares and running boards...PICS included

Well while waiting for spring break before I can start on my interior color change again...for the moment I'm currently trying to paint a set of chrome SR5 running boards for my truck. Another rattle can paint job from the back patio of tv4184. My friend and I (mostly my friend) scuffed up the chrome real good wetsanding it with 400 grit sand paper. Then we hit it with a coat of adhesive promoter. After that we put on a few coats of sandable primer. A few days later we wetsanded it with 800 grit sand paper til the coat of primer was super smooth. I should have taken pictures of the progress but so far its pretty good because after the last sanding, we hit it with a few coats of Medium Red duplicolor paint from walmart and then 2 coats of clear. Here are some pictures of the work so far...

Some more wetsanding with 2000 grit and another few coats of clear and it'll be ready to go back on my rig. I know that most people do sliders or side step bars but I kind of wanted to be a little different with my rig so I decided to go with the running boards since I'm not raising the rig anytime soon. 20 bux of rattle can paint beats a $300 professional job too! These pictures acutally dont do any justice for the job so far. They actually look better than the paint job thats on my car but thats cuz its all battered from the Houston summers. The medium red paint actually matches the sunfire red pretty well too. I just thought I'd make a post to keep some progress on my car and give others out there some ideas maybe? hehe.

I never got the before pics. They were just the plain chrome boards and I removed the black rubber on top to paint them. I'll get some after pics when they're back on the car though.

looks good so far. How well did that duplicolor color match your stock paint color?

Well the running boards don't exactly go right next to the car but they match up pretty well. I've used this paint before for my 99' grill, 99' license plateholder, and windsheild fluid sprayers but back then I didn't use the correct clear coat so everything when south after a year. I used this clear glaze for dishes instead of automotive clear coat so that stuff started cracking. This time though I used plenty of automotive clear coat and the same medium red paint. Now I only need the end caps to make the running boards line up with the fender flares. In the mean time here are the pictures.

Pictures don't really do justice. I'm gonna use some polisher on them to finish the job and then put some wax on it. For now I'll keep the front mud guards on to try to keep them from getting chipped. Its too bad the rest of my car doesn't look as good. Stupid pollen rain...everything is dusted yellow making the rig look dirty...haha.
