About a month ago my son's 1998 Tacoma 4x4 with the 2.7 got some bad gas, a lot of water in the tank. After draining the tank we refilled it and ran a bottle of seafoam with the next 3 fill ups to make sure all the water was run out. Two days ago he tried to start the truck and it stalled a couple of times then ran fine. Yesterday evening he tried to start the truck and it turned over fine but didn't sound like it was even trying to fire. A friend of his sprayed some starting fluid in the throttle body and it fired right up but immediately died when the starting fluid burned out.

Today I was messing with it, thinking he might have gotten some water in the tank again, or maybe his fuel filter might have clogged. I disconnected his fuel line between the tank and the filter and turned the key on.. nothing. I'm not sure if the Tacoma's fuel system runs like my 91 truck but doesn't the system pressurize, or supposed to, when the ignition key turns on? I'm thinking the water in his tank might have started his pump to rust up but figured Id get some opinions from some guys that had more experience with the Tacoma's. All my yota exp. is from 1991 prior and have no clue to any changes, if any, Toyota made to the 95+ trucks.

 

Check the fuses first to see if one hasn't blown.

 

I have already checked the fuses, I learned that the hard way when I was 17 after spending a bit over $200. Some lessons you never forget heh.

 

not really a fuel guy, but cant you disconnect the line from the injectors and manually power the pump to see if its seized up or not.

also test and see if it is getting suffient spark

 

How's the fuel pump relay?

.....might as well pick the low lying fruit first.

 

Well Disconnecting the fuel line before it goes into the filter should have given me a good squirt of fuel when I turned the key on, IF the tacomas are supposed to pressurize with the key on, also tried turning motor over with it disconnected and still no fuel.

Ill try swapping in a different relay, cant hurt heh

 

I was reading through some manuals this weekend on the fuel side, and yeah you should have fuel with just the key turned. There are different pressure specs for key turned, running and when shut off but pressure should be there nonetheless.

As stated, check fuses, relay and maybe somewhere in the wire harness to see if voltage is getting to the pump.

Simple test to see if pump is getting voltage - have someone turn the key, which should engage the pump, and listen at the tank!
