truck stuck wont move? brakes gearbox. 4x4???

hi i have a 95 4-runner. it felt like the truck was not correctly in gear last week. the in the 15 degree cold i went to the local store. put my parking brake on 5spd..went to get in truck and it would not move. it would lunge forward then stall . whle it seemed somethink was holding it back. messed with it a few times and it poped free????. while leaving it sit over night i left the parking brake off.
any help would be great 95 v6 4x4 5spd.

yeah thats sounds like the drifting brake is "hanging: up or it could be the rear parsomething the rear brake thingamjig under the truck with the pole looking thingy to the axle, mine locked up on me and the rear wheels just didnt move and my parking brake is cut free but how did it do after you started it in the morning with out the brake on?

Were you driving in snow/ice? If so, you should never use your parking brake in those conditions. It will freeze 'on'.

i am about to drive it this morning with parking brake okk. i will report back..what are the odd's of drivetrain binding

Just leave it in reverse, that will act like a parking brake.

TODAY ON SHORT DRIVE OK...128K MILES but it seems like something might be binding in rear. at shop last year . state inspection. i told my mechanic to check driveline real well. and lube shalf's etc..could it be not break related if so what would you check for. i am afraid of getting stuck. this sat, i got to drive 100 miles each way.

1st or reverse is better, more load/braking effect on the drive train.

not the gears bob. Your parking brake bellcrank is stuck. Crawl under the truck (yes I know how cold it is). Follow the parking brake cable to each rear wheel. The lever that the cable attaches to is what gets stuck. With the parking brake released the top of the lever should be all of the way towards the drum (when the brake is applied the top moves towards the diff.). Make sure that it is all the way forward. You can grab the cable and pull down to see the lever work. If it is not moving all the way forward it is applying pressure to the ebrake mech and will drag the brakes. Hope this helps.

from an engineering standpoint I would have designed it to fail (ie. get stuck) open, so the vehicle could still move.

I use Reverse as my ebrake, the wife forgets the 9 million times I've told her not to use it, and causes me to crawl under and free it first thing in the morning (always when I'm running late to work).

still dragging

hi it seems like it still drags off and on. i am not using parking brake. the abs. was clicking the other day. that went away . i drove 150 miles this weekend no problem. but when i take off at a stop sign it seems to drag sometimes. and when i let off the gas it seems to not glide like a car or truck should??? i put my hand on the wheels checking for heat but i felt none. if its the park sticking can it stick by it self-parking brake-when not in use...possible bad drums or shoes. rotors or pads. it seems if i could guess that its coming from the rear of the truck.
ant help would be great. we got lot's of ice and snow here today

I never use a parking brake on the kind of them sticking.. I use first but i live and drive in all flat land too[ the delta ] so that makes it easy for me..

yes i got stuck real bad last week. but something still is not right . its better that i dont use the brake. but still somethings wrong.

The most common problem that causes the brake to drag on the rear on a 4 wheel drive truck , is siezed pivot on the e brake arms on the rear brak backing plate. There is a cast aluminum fixture that the arm goes throuugh and since the arm is made of steel, there is a big problem with electrolosis.

Anyhow if it is not too bad you can usually pull the boot open and spray some grease onto the pivot and work it free. Sometimes you have to dissassemble the whole thing and drive the pin out and bead blast it then lube it and reassmble it. I have seen them that were so seized to prevent the from being freed without breaking them.

Of course this is something you want to inspect to see what is actually wrong. It could be a cable or another piece of linkage that is sticking.

Oh yea, If you use your e-brake all the time then it is much less likely to sieze.

do you have manual hubs???? I forgot and left my hubs locked in once and it does not roll freely then and seems slugish...just a thought.

I don't know ANYTHING about the parking brake set up on the 4runner, BUT, if it is like my old Volvo's, it could be the lining separating from the shoe. The Volvo uses disc brakes for stopping but in the inside of the rotor the parking brake is shoes and drum. If the runner is set up that way pull the rotors and check the shoes.
Just a thought.

its auto hubs. when the weather gets a little better. i will climb under truck get a helper to pull brake on. then checked and grease as needed. also see if its binding.
