Proportioning Valve tricks?

'94 2WD pickup - can anyone relate experience with the proportioning valve adjustment doo-dad that hangs off the rear end? I'm wondering if it's even necessary, are there manually adjustable replacements, etc. I have the bed off and it seems the thing hardly moves when bouncing the truck and putting some weight on it. I don't even know if it's working properly.

Thanks for any advice, opinions, etc.

You can manually adjust the rod by some trial and error testing. Mine is cut off fairly short and tied up to the bottom of the bed now with some stiff wire. To test it I slam on the brakes on a wet blacktop road and see if the rear locks up before the front. You want the front to lock up before the back BTW. Yeah one of those fancy adjustment valves would be nice too.
